Fabulous places to visit in Zanzibar
If you're considering booking Tanzania holidays, Zanzibar is a wonderful destination to choose. Boasting luxurious accommodation, gorgeous beaches, history and culture, it is the ideal place to relax - find out the top places to visit while you're here with our guide.
Often considered to be one of the best beach destinations in East Africa, Zanzibar is somewhere you'll find sun, sand and gorgeous views in abundance, while there is also a fascinating history and culture to be discovered too.
Indeed, while you may be tempted to do nothing more than unwind in the sunshine or splash around in the sea, there are also interesting towns and villages that are well worth visiting during your time here.
Give some thought to exactly how you would like to spend your holiday before you set off, such as whether are keen to stay at a large resort or somewhere quieter and with fewer tourists. Of course, simply planning a few places you would like to visit is also worthwhile, as it can help to make sure you don't miss out on anything while you're there.
It's likely that you'll be keen to spend at least some of your time on the island's paradise-like beaches - or even stay in Zanzibar accommodation there - and Matemwe is the perfect place to choose.
Boasting palm trees and broad stretches of white sand, the beaches here are what many of us dream of when we think of taking an idyllic break abroad. With an excellent site for diving - the offshore atoll of Mnemba - nearby, it is also a wonderful attraction for those keen to discover some of the incredible local marine life.
What's more, unlike many of the areas on the east coast, there are no large resorts here, meaning you can have your pick of private houses or small lodges to stay in.
Situated on a peninsula south of the island's capital, Fumba is a location well worth visiting if you want to stay somewhere a little more remote. In contrast to a lot of Zanzibar's beaches, those here are backed by forest and are often deserted, adding to the feeling of remoteness. Plus, located offshore is a wonderful marine park. Here you'll find islands perfect for visiting for relaxing, lazy days.
Alternatively, why not explore Kizimkazi? Like Fumba, the coastal landscape here is markedly different from that of the eastern shores. Comprising cliffs and small coves, the beach has little room for lodges, which has meant that this location has retained an air of authenticity that those eager to have a true experience of the island are likely to love.
Furthermore, as this is one of the first places on the coast where the Shirazi people settled, this little fishing village is also historically important.
If the island's past is something that particularly piques your interest, make sure you visit Stonetown, which is Zanzibar's capital. Home to a variety of attractions both historical and cultural, it is a fascinating destination with a unique, marvellous atmosphere.
Head to the local markets and see the amazing produce on offer, from fruits and vegetables at the Darajani market to gold and gemstones at the jewellery market. Meanwhile, the wonderfully-preserved Hamamni baths are also well worth a visit.
Whether you are after nothing more than sun and sand or you are eager to soak up a little culture, Zanzibar is an excellent destination to choose for your next holiday.
