Gokyo Lakes: a highlight of any Nepal tour
When people think of a trekking holiday in Nepal, they could be forgiven for thinking it would not offer much in the way of luxury, but don't let that fool you - the country has lots to offer those who want to enjoy a quality trip, especially the Gokyo Lakes.
Providing some of the world's most spectacular scenic views, Nepal's hiking trails allow tourists the perfect opportunity to spot its most famous landmarks, including Mount Everest.
Both this mountain and the Gokyo Lakes are located in the Himalayas of north-east Nepal and bring in thousands of holidaymakers each year, particularly those who enjoy a little adventure during their time away.
About the Gokyo Lakes
The Gokyo Lakes, a system of six main lakes, are located 16,000 ft above sea level, which makes them the highest freshwater lake network in the world.
They are situated in the Sagarmatha National Park at the base of Cho Oyo, the world's sixth highest mountain, where you have stunning views of both the lakes themselves and the surrounding Himalayas.
Places to stop
However, before you make it to the lakes you will need to stop off at a number of places on your trekking trip and a short stay at Namche Bazaar is often recommended.
This small mountainside village is situated in the Khumbu zone and is popular with tourists who need to acclimatise to the altitude before continuing their journey.
There are several lodges and internet cafes here, but those who want to experience the best accommodation the settlement has to offer should book in at the Everest View hotel.
The establishment is on a ridge overlooking Mount Everest and offers guests panoramic views of the famous landmark and its landscapes - a great opportunity to get the best photographs for your holiday scrapbook.
One of the most modern hotels in the region, it remains true to its traditional roots and has ancient stones carved with old Tibetan Buddhist inscriptions decorating the interior walls.
The staff are typical Nepalese Sherpas - courteous, polite and always smiling - and the rooms are extremely spacious with contemporary fittings and fixtures.
The climb
Once you have spent a night or two in these luxurious surroundings, it is time to move on and from here most tourists climb past the Khumbu Glacier.
The glacier is the highest body of ice of its kind in the world and is the final part of the trail that leads to the Everest Base Camp area - a starting spot for most expeditions up Mount Everest.
Having taken in the sights, it is time to double back to the Imja Kola River Valley before moving on to Dzonglha and the Cho La Pass.
While this is a challenging trek, there are several places to stop off along the way and your reward for overcoming the pass is that you will have almost arrived at the Gokyo Lakes.
The lakes themselves are a sight to behold, with beautiful turquoise waters and fantastic views of the mountain landscapes.
Hoping to stay at the lakes for a few days? You may want to book a room at the Cho Oyu lodge, which is small but very comfortable.
Offering insulated rooms, indoor toilets and a solar-heated dining room, the hotel is a great place to rest your feet and enjoy the weather, scenery and company of friends and family in peace.
