Nice: the ideal place to celebrate a honeymoon

If you are planning to get married soon and are looking for a honeymoon destination with a twist, Nice has all the facilities you need. This classy French destination has everything from top restaurants and designer shops to beaches and cultural sites.

Going on long-haul flights to far-flung destinations is quite popular with honeymooners, but all it takes is a very short plane trip and you can start your honeymoon in Nice sooner than you think. You won't have to waste any time on hefty journeys, which is why the city is ideal for a romantic break. This is especially the case if you get car hire in Nice, as you can avoid airport to accommodation transfers with several drop-offs.

Below are some of the top reasons why Nice - the capital of the Cote d'Azur - is the perfect location for your honeymoon.

The luxury accommodation

Nice is popular with the rich and famous, so it should come as no surprise that the range of accommodation on offer is luxurious, especially if you stay in the honeymoon suite. However, don't be mistaken for thinking you need a large budget to come to Nice. The quality of the two and three-star hotels is high, such as the Hotel Villa La Tour and the Hotel Villa Rivoli. If you want five-star luxury, though, some of the available options include the Hotel Le Negresco and Le Palais de la Mediterranee.

The fine dining

You will no doubt want to enjoy a candlelit meal or two during your honeymoon in a restaurant serving fine wine and good food. Luckily, Nice has plenty of establishments that are perfect for two, and you are in the right spot if you like gourmet meals. Located in the Hotel Le Negresco is the renowned Restaurant Le Chantecler, which is lavishly decorated. If you really want to push the boat out, get stuck into the a la carte menu, which is created by famous chef Jean-Denis Rieubland. Of course, you do not need to spend a fortune to enjoy good food, with Restaurant Les Epicuriens and Restaurant Les Deux Canailles a handful of the other options.

The beaches

Nice might be a city, but it also has some beaches you can both lie back on and relax. There is a wide choice, so you will easily find a secluded stretch of sand where you can enjoy some time together. Plage Florida, Blue Beach, Galion and Neptune are some of the beaches to select from, but keep in mind many are private so you might have to pay. Of course, having a car means you can always drive outside of Nice to a sandy public stretch of sand.

The culture

As tempting as it is to spend your honeymoon in your suite or on the beach, make sure you visit at least a couple of Nice's cultural attractions. If you like art, the Matisse Museum should be near the top of your itinerary. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to famous artist Henri Matisse, who lived in the city between 1918 and 1954. La Basilique Notre Dame is the biggest church in Nice and has 19th-century stained-glass windows, two square towers and a rose window that details the day the Catholics believe the Virgin May ascended into heaven, also known as the Assumption.

You should also make time to explore Old Nice, which is lined with stunning buildings like La Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate. The cathedral - which was actually a church until the 16th century - takes its inspiration from Rome's early Baroque architecture.
