The top 5 reasons why Milan is perfect for a honeymoon
Milan is a fantastic city for a honeymoon and offers everything you need for the perfect romantic break. For a start, you can enjoy candlelit meals in one of its top-class restaurants, sharing a bottle of wine produced in the nearby Lombardy hills.
If you decide to pick up a hire car from Milan Airport, you can be at your honeymoon suite as quickly as possible, rather than having to endure several drop-offs on a shuttle. Likewise, it will also give you the freedom to explore the city's surrounding area, as there are lots of destinations for a romantic daytrip.
Here are the top five reasons why Milan is fantastic for newlyweds.
Its vineyards
As mentioned, the surrounding hills produce plentiful grape crops to be turned into bottles of some of the world's most famous wines. A drive to a vineyard makes for a lovely day out and you will be able to learn more about the production process, as well as have a little sip of some of the wine. Head to the Oltrepo Pavese region to get a closer look at the renowned Champenois sparkling wines, along with the intense and full-bodied reds that are also produced here.
Lake Como
If you like to follow the world of celebrity, you will already know that actor George Clooney is perhaps the most famous resident of Lake Como. He owns a home beside the lake and is often photographed out and about in the stunning destination. The water is the ideal backdrop for a romantic stroll, while you can also take a ferry to see some of the amazing villas that line the lake. Should you feel like getting a little bit more active, head into the mountains for a hike, stopping in a secluded spot along the way to enjoy a picnic.
Milan's amazing monuments and cultural attractions
Within Milan city centre itself there is plenty to see and do during a honeymoon. The breathtaking buildings, including top historic attractions, are romantic in themselves. One site you certainly won't be able to miss is the Duomo di Milano - the cathedral of the city. You will be greeted by a gilded statue of Madonnina standing on a 108 m high platform and inside is just as impressive, especially the stained-glass windows.
Its art
Even if you and your partner are not huge art fans, you will certainly appreciate the masterpieces that Milan boasts. Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper is housed in the Refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie and is one of the most famous pieces of art in the world. There is also Basket of Fruit, by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, which you can find in the Ambrosiana Gallery. Quietly soaking up works such as these is a great way to spend a few hours with a loved one.
The cuisine
Italy is famous for its mouth-watering food and you can spend your evenings tucking into delicious dishes at top restaurants. Milan boasts many historic restaurants that should be on your list of places to eat at. These include Trattoria Bagutta, Zucca in Galleria and Panzerotti Luini. If you want to sample some truly traditional dishes, make sure you order the Risotto alla Milanese, while minestrone soup is filling, intense in flavour and satisfying. Of course, all this can be washed down with a glass of the local wine!
